Carrot
Daucus carota
Carrots were purple, white and yellow for most of history; the familiar orange root was popularised by Dutch growers in the 1600s - supposedly to honour the Royal House of Orange - a fine story, but never quite proven.
In the Second World War, Britain spread the myth that its pilots' night vision came from eating carrots - partly to hide the invention of radar, partly to shift a surplus crop. The kernel of truth: vitamin A really does aid sight.
The carrot appears in Dutch Golden Age painting as the everyman's vegetable - set against the luxury of lobster and lemon, a quiet emblem of honest, common fare.

Our garden looks great

I ordered 10 signs and our garden looks great. The engraving is crisp and visitors always comment on them.

Beautiful and sturdy

The charcoal acrylic is premium, beautiful and sturdy, far nicer than the plastic markers and pen I used before. I added Nan's tomato sauce recipe.

Really lovely gift

I bought a 6 pack of How to Grow signs for a keen-gardener friend. She loves them, they are a really lovely gift. Can you add Fennel please?

Good to know

Questions, answered.

What are the signs made from? −

Matte, charcoal-grey acrylic, around 100 mm wide, with an integrated spike. Weatherproof and fade-proof - built to live outdoors in the bed year-round

Engraved or printed? +

Always engraved, never printed. The lettering is physically cut into the surface, so it won’t wash away, peel, or fade in sunlight the way a printed label does.

Can I write my own wording for a plant? +

Yes. Choose Custom Words on any plant and type exactly what you’d like engraved for that plant - grow notes, a family recipe, a memory, a date, whatever you want the garden to remember.

Can I create my own sign from scratch? +

Yes. Visit the Memories page, select any sign and type exactly what you’d like engraved - title, subtitle, and content up to 1000 characters for $9.95 AUD per sign.

Will my custom sign look exactly as I typed it? +

The content itself is engraved exactly as the wording appears at checkout, so please double-check every letter before you order. The layout is optimised by us so that single words aren't floating on their own and the content has enough breathing space.

How long does delivery take? +

We cut and ship within five business days of your order. We ship worldwide, with tracking on every order.

How much is delivery? +

Flat $10 anywhere in Australia and $18 anywhere else - the same whether you order one sign or twenty. Tracking on every order.

How should I care for it? +

None needed, really - an occasional wipe with a damp cloth keeps the engraving crisp. No sealing, oiling, or bringing it in for winter.
